Learn new skills

In this modern high-tech age the vast majority of people have a poor (or woeful!) array of practical skills. Many of us can use a computer or work a smart TV remote but would struggle to plumb a shower, build a shed or grow tomatoes. Our ready-made consumerist society has effectively de-skilled many of us. Yet traditional skills are still important. Indeed, if you are considering an eco-living lifestyle then learning traditional skills could be vital. At the very least, you will save an awful lot of money by knowing how to build things that you need (and especially if you use materials that are recycled or that you get free of charge). Moreover, even if you buy equipment you should ask the question – what happens if it breaks down and you are in the middle of nowhere? The ability to at least fix the equipment you use isn’t just an asset - it could prove to be a godsend sometime.

Useful skills that you could consider learning include;

  • Gardening
  • Permaculture
  • Carpentry
  • Plumbing
  • Building
  • Electrics
  • Fishing
  • Water management
  • And more…
