Potential disadvantages

There probably more advantages to disadvantages. The main disadvantage relates to potential disputes and conflict resolution. It’s one reason why some intentional communities have ground rules as well as protocols in place to manage conflict.

If you are considering joint ventures or co-purchases, then it is worth thinking about this in advance. Don’t just buy the first thing that crops up with total strangers, but firstly meet up (several times) and discuss ideas, goals and values as well as being open about areas that you see for potential conflict.

If you are just looking to buy a larger plot of land together, and intend building separate dwellings out of each other’s way, then there is arguably less risk of conflict. On the other hand, if you are four couples with kids living together for the first time under one roof then the chances of conflict increase. It’s certainly not impossible to make things work – and many people around the world have benefited hugely from coming together in this way – but it pays to get to know each other first and set your stall out clearly, openly and honestly.
